Are you a victim of domestic violence and need help?

Are you scared, are you being threatened?

·       At home

·       In your marriage

·       By your partner

·       In your relationship

·        In your family

Do you feel you cannot cope alone anymore?  You don’t have to.

We want to help you.

Various forms of help are

available for you and your children.

You decide when you want it.

You may have many questions and fears.

Let’s talk about them together

What are the consequences of discussing your situation with outsiders? It may be that the one who is abusing you threatens you with something even more serious if you were to tell someone about the abuse, seek for help or try to leave. Have the threats been directed at children? All this is common for the abusing party in domestic violence cases. Do not let the threats stop you. Act. Let’s put our heads together to find out what kind of support you need and what we could do for you.

How are you?

Domestic violence causes stress. Everyday life can turn into a never-ending cycle of fear and struggle for survival. The cycle can be broken by turning to your local social welfare office, health centre, child health clinic, family clinic or the staff at your children’s day-care centre or school, among many others. The police also have a duty to help you.

Be brave

The first step that requires courage is telling outsiders about the abuse or threats you have experienced. Professional health care and social workers are well informed about the problems of domestic violence and they are ready and able to deal with your problems.

Espoo Shelter helps abused women and their children every day

You may be one of them. The shelter is on-call 24 hours a day, every day. You can call whenever is most convenient for you. You can call anonymously if you wish, even though we would like you to know from the very start that you should not feel ashamed of having become a victim of violence, threats or psychological abuse. Call 09 5915130. The person on-call is waiting to discuss the situation with you at any time.

You can call us

To share your feelings, anxiety and fears. To exchange thoughts or to get assistance. The person who picks up the phone at the shelter is someone who is familiar with helping women who have suffered domestic violence.

Stop by,

And meet up with one of the people working at the shelter to discuss what kind of help we could offer you and what kind of help would benefit you the most. Together we can search for alternative ways to help you.

The shelter is located in Espoo, in the vicinity of the Jorvi hospital in Lippajärvi, close to Vanha Turuntie road and the old people’s home, Aurorakoti. Address: Espoon Turvakoti,  Jänismetsäntie 2,  02940 Espoo .

You can become a resident of  Espoo Shelter

Domestic violence often leads to a situation, where the home is no longer a safe place to be. The abuse becomes more severe and dangerous every time. Take your situation seriously. You may have been forced to underestimate how critical the situation is for you and your children. Come and talk to us. Is someone close to you concerned about your safety? Have you told a social worker, a doctor, the police or a family clinic about the abuse? The shelter may be the right place to come to if you are beaten, pushed, threatened, not allowed to sleep or prevented from taking care of your children at home or if your home feels unsafe for some other reason.

At Espoo Shelter abused women can live with their children (or without children ) to get through the crisis that domestic violence has caused them. The time spent at the shelter can vary from a few days to a few months depending on the individual needs of the customer.

It is possible to go to work, school and children’s day-care centre from the shelter. The residents of the shelter are offered assistance with routine tasks and advice on when to use social and health care services as well as legal services. The main function of the shelter is to provide refuge for women and children who have become victims of domestic violence − a safe place where they can go through the changes in their lives that are required for ending the domestic violence. Accommodation issues, divorce proceedings, child custody and maintenance matters, reports of offences, police interviews and questions of livelihood are the most common matters taken care of during the stay at the shelter.

Naisten Apu Espoossa ry is an association founded by women who through their practical work want to put an end to violence that is directed at women. The association was registered in 1980.

Espoo Shelter was opened on 1 January 1983 as a refuge for abused women and their children in time of crises. The shelter comprises ten rooms for accommodation as well as a canteen and a common living area.

In addition to running the shelter, the association carries out general educational work by organising meetings, courses, presentations and discussions and by lobbying and publishing information.

The association also tries to affect legislation, authorities and municipal decision makers by giving presentations and statements. The association is interested in cooperation with similar organisations and other voluntary and administrative bodies that aim to prevent violence directed at women.
